Where We Are in Place and Time: Central idea: Movement of people shapes society.
By delving back in time, the children can explore the concept of time and migration and how the two big ideas have brought about change in our global society. I have taught this unit of inquiry with my 4th grade. Each time, I find that it is one of my favourites. There is so much to explore. It can easily be adapted for 3rd-6th grades, although the math is geared for 4th-5thth grades/IB Phase 4. With over 100 pages of interactive, hands on , engaging, inquiry based activities, this transdisciplinary unit will take you through math, critical thinking, writing, geography, reading for information and, of course, history.
Our lines of inquiry:
• People move for different reasons
•How global events impact human migration
•Changes on society from human migration
As we travelled through time with our interactive timeline, we travelled across the globe, exploring the causes and effects of migration. The inquiries came flooding fast and furiously as we learned more and more about how people were affected by global movement through hands on research, authentic artefacts , communication and much, much more. The unit culminates in a summative assessment where the children prepare their own personal narrative. This can be planned by the children and outcomes will vary. The materials for co-planning the assessment are included as well as the assessment that was used in my class should you prefer not to co-plan.
This unit inspired questioning such as:
•What events caused mass migration across time?
•Why are so many people still migrating from their homes today?
•Why do we still have mass migrations today in the world?
•How do global societies deal with cultural differences?
Learning how to read clues from artefacts and also from evidence in the text, helped us to become incredible historians as we had to figure out the answers to our lines of inquiry.
Integrated into the inquiry:
•Reading for information - 5 articles sharing information across history and the globe.
•Context clues
•Spelling inquiries
•Maths: data analysis
•Maths: calculating distance
•Mapping skills
•Writing: Letters, Narrative, Poetry
•And much, much more.
Through explorations within math, reading, writing, geography, history and art, the children gather knowledge of how migration of people brought about change to their world and contributed to societies today.
